What a week in Tornado Nation! So many exciting things happening all at the end of the school year!
First off, if you haven’t heard, congratulations to the King Lady Tornado softball team for earning the College’s first Conference Carolinas Tournament Championship this weekend! We had four conference tournaments going on this weekend and bids to the Olympics being handed out, so without further ado …
Softball’s huge week began with back-to-back wins (3-5, 9-1) over Saint Andrews Presbyterian College to conclude their regular season slate last Tuesday. In the doubleheader Kendall Brabson recorded four hits including a home run and five RBI, and Tiffany Harris recorded her first career home run. With the victories the Ladies finished the regular season 30-17 and extending their program record for most wins in a season. Then the real fun began…
The Lady Tornado hit the Conference Carolinas Tournament hard, upsetting No. 3 Queens 4-3 in a 12-inning matchup. King continued the day with an exciting 5-4 comeback win over Coker College. In the doubleheader Christina Melcher stood out with two home runs and six RBI. The Tornado kept right on truckin’, defeating top-seeded North Greenville University for the first time, Saturday morning. Behind Hannah Light’s pitching effort and great team offense, they beat the Crusaders, 4-1, and advanced to the championship game. The Lady Tornado returned Sunday to face NGU, where they again defeated the Crusaders 4-1 for the title. In the matchup Hannah Light pitched another stellar game. Cora Milliken and Christina Melcher continued to stand out with great hitting, including Melcher’s third home run of the tournament. The Tornado clinched their first Conference Carolinas Tournament Championship in their first year in the league. With the win the ladies will compete in the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament, May 4-6.
Tennis concluded their regular season against Pikeville University where the ladies defeated the Bears 5-4, and the men fell by the same margin. Karissa King, Sarah Anderson, Kayla Ketron, and Eden Sherrod all clinched their singles matches in the end-of-the-season victory. They conclude their season with a 3-16 overall record, and Eden Sherrod finished with the best overall singles record, 7-9. The men continued to the Conference Carolinas Men’s Tennis Tournament, but fell to Coker College 5-4 in the first round despite singles victories by Pablo Vidal, Leo Brigato, and Seth Hale. Pablo Vidal and Jose Avila, who finished with overall singles records of 14-5 and 11-6 respectively, earned a spot on the All-Conference Team. Seth Hale and Patrick Jones finished with the best team doubles record of 15-4 overall.
M/W Track and Field competed in the Conference Carolinas Track and Field Championships where a well-rounded team performance helped the men’s team clinch second place. Ricky Bell tallied two event victories and broke a Conference Carolinas Track and Field Championship record. Naseem Haje took the victory in one event, and finished second in another, tallying 18 points for King in their 150-point finish. The women’s side finished third overall behind first place finished from Shelbie Burchfield (women’s high jump), Tia Keitt (women’s long jump) and Hannah Witt (women’s 10k). Maegan Henry was named the Freshman of Year by an astounding mark in the voting.
Baseball secured their spot in the Conference Carolinas Championship with a pair of wins over Belmont Abbey Friday. The first 8-6 victory was delivered courtesy of great team hitting including a double by Garrett Cook and a home run by Brandon Reed. Cory Rhodes, the hero of game two, tossed a one-hit complete game in the 2-0 victory. The men could not sweep the series as the Crusaders pulled ahead early and defeated the Tornado 5-2 on Saturday, despite a Jarrod Payne home run. No. 4 King will face No. 3 Pfieffer in the first round of the Conference Carolinas Tournament which runs April 26-29.
M/W Golf is competing at the Conference Carolinas Tournament in Pinehurst, N.C. The tournament was set to start on Sunday, but weather postponed the start until Monday morning and adjusted each team’s schedule. The men will now play 54 holes, and the women will play 36 holes, starting today and playing the last 18 Tuesday.
Women’s Wrestling
King sent six of its best to represent the College at the Olympic Trials held in Iowa City, Iowa over the weekend. The tournament was held with winners getting the opportunity to represent the United States in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, England. All participating athletes won at least one bout against some very stiff competition. Julia Salata finished fourth overall in the 72kg weight class while Alli Ragan and Emily Martin each earned three wins in their respective weight classes.
Cycling
At the SECCC Championships this weekend held in Brevard, N.C. the King cycling team placed second overall.
